coffee and thoughts

IMG_0679 It becomes a lot easier to cope with things when you take ten minutes out of a busy day for a thoughtful cup of coffee. My recent trip to Edinburgh was a perfect excuse to sample a multitude of quaint coffee shops, people watch and think. Highly recommended – and the coffee too.

experimental banana bread

IMG_0651Having finally moved into my new (and very student-y) house at university, it was about time I did my first bake in the somewhat grotty kitchen. I hadn’t quite established that the kitchen lacked scales, measuring cups and mixing bowls; all the oven markings had been rubbed off so there was no telling what you were heating up, or how hot it might be; I also totally forgot to buy baking parchment. The odds were most definitely against me, but somehow it turned out ok! Or even better than ok! Positively yummy. And I definitely feel like I’ve bonded with that kitchen, even if just through my gentle coaxing of the cooker. Bring on a year of happy student baking!

missing adventure

Cooking and food are soothing in so many respects. In my personal opinion, a cup of tea is the cure for all evils, but cooking and pottering around the kitchen are certainly viable substitutes. I’m currently hankering after my adventures in Peru, the bizarre cuisine we sampled (like this mashed potato cake) and the amazing people one always meets travelling. P1010053
